To get started, you just need to do the following steps, explained in more detailed below:
- Install our dwMap app on your Garmin watch
- Link your watch to your website account
- Create a route
- Choose the active route for your watch
There is an excellent user-created video illustrating this at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKrjomiTgeQ
Install dwMap app on your Garmin Watch
Our dwMap watch app installs to your watch from the Garmin Connect IQ Store.
Make sure that your watch is connected by Bluetooth to Garmin Connect Mobile running on your iPhone or Android phone, and that your phone and watch can get online.
If the Garmin Connect app has trouble installing the app, power your Garmin off and turn it back on. It may be a cliché with electronic device, but this fixes all sorts of problems with the Garmin installation process!
You may need to disable WiFi on your watch for dwMap to be able to communicate reliably, as Connect IQ apps appear to work best over the Bluetooth connection to your phone, but this varies by watch model.
The Garmin software may tell you that you need to update your firmware, even when you think you have the latest version. In this case, disconnect your device and see if it installs new firmware that it has downloaded. Then reconnect the device and try installing our app again. You can check what your device is actually running by going to Settings - System - About.
dwMap User Guides by watch model
The first time you open it on your watch it will show you a simple link code to securely link your watch to your website account.
Enter Link Code from your device
We have implemented a simple but secure mechanism to link your watch to your account here.
- When you open the app on your watch the first time it will show you an 8 character code.
- Enter that code at https://dynamic.watch/link and the watch will know which account it is associated with. Conversely, our website will know that you have authorized access by this watch.
- After you have entered the code on our website, tap the screen or press the Up button of your watch to complete the linking process.
If you get No Bluetooth to Garmin Connect or Error Code 1 or 2 on your watch during this step, make sure that your watch is connected by Bluetooth to Garmin Connect Mobile running on your phone (iPhone or Android [Windows Phone will likely not work]), and that your phone and watch can get online.
On a Vivoactive HR or Vivoactive 3, you must disable Auto-lock in Menu->Settings->System->Auto-lock if you have it enabled. Otherwise you will keep getting a new code every time you tap the screen to try to complete the link.
As an extra security measure, the code is only valid for 5 minutes after you open the app. If you do not enter the code here in time, don't worry, just exit and open the app again, and a new code will be generated.
You only have to do this once for each watch you link (and you can link any number of watches), and afterwards the app will only need an internet connection when you want change the downloaded route.
Create a Route
To use dwMap on your watch you need to have one or more routes in your account on the dynamicWatch website. You can create routes on the website using the Route Planner or you can import them from many other web services.
- Draw a route using our Route Planner
Click on your starting point, then click on further points to add them to your route. A route will be built from point to point. You can choose between cycling or pedestrian routing. Press the disk icon to save your route. See Using Route Planner - Upload a GPX/TCX/KML route file from another website
These are common route file formats that can be exported (downloaded) from other routing planning websites and imported (uploaded) into the website in the Import page. See Importing Routes - Import a route directly from services such as Ride with GPS or Strava
dynamicWatch has a powerful feature that lets you link your accounts on other websites and import in your routes directly. See Importing Routes
Routes that you have created and imported are listed on your home page.
Choose the active route for your watch
Click on the next to a route in your route list to set it as your current active route, which will be then marked with a .
When you open the dwMap app on your watch it will automatically download this route. Your watch needs access to the Internet through your phone in order to download the new route, but once it has it it does not need to be online. If you are not online when you open the app it will continue to use the route that it has.
You can change the current active route here and refresh it in the app at any time by choosing Refresh on the app's menu (press-hold Up on watches without a menu button).
