After you have installed dwMap on your watch and setup your account (see Get Started), you're ready to get out and use it.
See below for important watch model-specific information and tips.
Map Page
When you start the app it will show its Map page. This shows your current active route, at 6 zoom levels.
To zoom in and out:
- On touchscreen watches: swipe left/right (up/down on some watches)
- On watches with 5 buttons, use the Up/Down buttons on the left side of the watch case
If the app can get online via your phone, it will download your current active route. Otherwise it will continue to use the most recent route that it has.
Your current position and direction of travel is shown as an arrow, allowing you see whether you are on-course, and when to turn next.
If you have chosen Track-up in Watch Settings then the map will rotate so that "up" on the screen is your forward direction. A rotating "N" on the left of the screen will point north. Otherwise, you will be in North-up mode where north is always "up".
Where you were most recently will be shown with a trail of "breadcrumb" dots.
Downloading Route and Settings
You can press the Menu button (press-hold Up on watches without a menu button, or see below for touchscreen watches) to get the App Menu and choose Refresh at any time that your phone is online. This will download your current active route and your watch app settings from the website.
If you do not want to use a route for the current activity, on the dwMap app Menu choose Delete Route to remove the current active route from the watch. If you still have a current active route chosen on your route list you can download it again to the watch with Refresh.
Recording your Activity
Press the Start/Stop button on your watch to start your activity. This uses the built-in GPS recording system of your watch, and will appear in your history and sync with Garmin Connect just like any other activity. Press Start/Stop again to pause/resume.
At the end of your activity, press Start/Stop to pause, and press the Return or Exit button, and choose the Save option to leave the app.
You have to save your activity in order to leave the dwMap app. We chose this to minimize the risk you might accidentally delete an activity without saving it, while keeping the options simple (as we are very short of memory).
Data Fields Pages
The app has a set of three Data Fields pages to view your current activity stats.
- On touchscreen watches, tap the screen to switch between Data Fields pages and the Map page.
- On the 5-button watches, use the Up/Down buttons to move through the map zoom levels then through the Data Fields pages.
- You can configure the "lap" button to make it easier to switch between pages. See Back-is-Page vs Back-is-Lap.
The free version of dwMap shows 12 commonly used fields, such as current speed/pace and distance. Upgrade to dynamicWatch Premium and you can customize your pages and add exciting fields such as real-time weather and an elevation profile.
Navigation Page
If you have upgraded to dynamicWatch Premium you will have additional navigation features, including notifications for upcoming turns and if you go off-route. See dynamicWatch Premium Features Help.
dwMap App Menu
As we mentioned above, dwMap has an options menu. See below for where to find it on your watch model, and see dwMap App Menu for full information on the available options.
Watch Model Specific Notes

- To start the app, press the Start/Stop button (top-right button) when you are on the main watch face. Installed apps are listed there with the built-in activity features, such as Run and Bike.
- For the link step, you MUST disable Auto-lock in the watch's settings Menu->Settings->System->Auto-lock if you have it enabled. Otherwise you will keep getting a new code every time you tap the screen to try to complete the link.
- Tap the screen to switch between map and data fields views.
- Swipe-up/down to zoom in/out on the map page, or move between data fields page.
- To get to the dwMap app menu:

- Vivoactive 4, Venu, Venu Sq, Venu 2: Press-and-hold the bottom-right button.
- While your activity is recording, swipe-right to mark a lap.
- While your activity is recording, swipe-left will not do anything in dwMap. However this gesture can be useful if you want the backlight to come on to illuminate the screen.
- At the end of your activity, press Start/Stop to pause, and swipe-right and choose the Save option to leave the app.
- If you are using the Companion Phone App to send a route, there was a known issue with the Vivoactive 3: make sure the dwMap app is running on the watch before you send a route from the phone. The watch may lock-up (and need to be powered-off) if you send the route when dwMap is not running.
