On the Garmin Fenix 5, 6 and 7, Epix Gen 2, Enduro, Marq, Forerunner 245, 255, 265, 645, 745, 935, 945, 955 and 965 watches you can use either dwMap or routeCourse. We recommend you use routeCourse because then you get all the advantages of dynamicWatch for route planning and downloading, with the built-in map feature on these watches.
To start the app on your watch, press the Start (top-right) button when you are on the main watch face. Installed apps are listed there with the built-in activity features, such as Run and Bike.
When you start the routeCourse app on your watch it will show you a list of your "cloud" routes, which are the routes (sometimes called courses) that you have created (or imported) and stored online in your dynamicWatch account.
Use the Up/Down and Start buttons to select a route to view its details, and download and "launch" it in the watch's built-in activity/map feature.
If you select Download and press Start then the route will be downloaded and added to your watch's built-in Courses list (the one you get to from Menu > Navigate > Courses), and routeCourse will hand the route over to the built-in Ride, Run or Hike activity app so that you can immediately use it.
The watch will show a menu of your different activity types. These are the usual map and activity recorder features of the watch that you are already familiar with. Press the Back button if you want to return to routeCourse instead of starting the activity.
If you get an error message for the download, see Troubleshooting routeCourse.
After a route has been downloaded, the icon next to it will change from a cloud to a rectangle to show that it is now on the Garmin device.
Sorting
By default, the route list is sorted to show the nearest routes first. You can use the menu of the app (press and hold the Up button on the main routes list) to choose other sort options (nearest, newest, longest or name).
Using routeCourse when offline
routeCourse needs a data connection in order to work. However, as explained above, any route that routeCourse has downloaded is added to the normal, built-in Courses list on your watch (Menu > Navigate > Courses), so you can choose a route to use from there when you do not have a connection.
See Using routeCourse when not Online for detailed information on this.
Turn by Turn Directions
If you have our Premium option, routes from Ride with GPS can have course points (cue sheets) that are included in the routeCourse download, as are course points (cue sheets) contained in TCX files from other sources such as Plotaroute. Garmin watch models allow only 50 cue sheet course points per route, and just show turn direction arrows.
If a route downloaded by routeCourse does not include cue sheet directions your watch may be able to generate them using the built-in maps.
On the Fenix 5X and 5 Plus, Fenix 6/6X Pro and Fenix 7/7X Pro watches, in the Bike or Run activity, go to Settings, then there should be an option Routing - Courses. There choose "Use Map", not "Follow Course".
Route Preview Maps and Profiles
Another Premium feature is that you can view previews of your routes' maps and elevation profiles without downloading them. Learn more about routeCourse Preview Map and Profile.
